Stargazer Raccoon is a cozy little night explorer: a chubby gray raccoon in a navy starry T-shirt, burnt-orange shorts, mustard scarf, navy beret with a star, matching shoulder bag, and his own telescope on a tripod.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Gauge & Finished Size
- Approximate gauge: 6 sc = 1″ (2.5 cm) in the round with gray yarn.
- Finished size: about 8.5–9″ (21–23 cm) tall including beret.
Gauge is not critical, but keep stitches tight so stuffing doesn’t show.
Construction Overview
The raccoon’s head and body are worked together from the top down. Arms, legs, ears, tail, muzzle, and facial patches are crocheted separately and sewn on. Clothes and accessories (T-shirt, shorts, scarf, beret, bag, telescope) are all removable, so you can dress and pose him just like in the photo.

R2: inc around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
R4: sc around (18)

Eye Patch Arches (make 2 – cream)
Ch 9.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (8).
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 4, sc2tog (6).
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across (6).
Fasten off with a long sewing tail.
These will sit as curved arches above each eye, giving that classic raccoon mask outline.
Dark Mask Patches (make 2 – dark gray)
Ch 7.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (6).
Row 2–3: ch 1, turn, sc across (6).
Fasten off with a tail.
These rectangles sit under the eyes, blending into the muzzle and cheeks.
Face Assembly
- Pin the muzzle centered between the eyes so the top touches the eye line. Sew in place, stuffing lightly as you close.
- Position the dark mask patches horizontally from the sides of the muzzle toward the edges of the head. Their inner ends should tuck partly under the muzzle, and the eyes sit centered vertically on them. Stitch them neatly to the head.
- Curve the cream eye-patch arches above each eye, following the edge of the mask patches. Sew in place, smoothing the curve for that distinctive raccoon look.
- Add a tiny white highlight stitch on each eye with cream or white yarn.
Night Sky T-Shirt (navy)
The T-shirt is a simple tube with armholes made by chaining and skipping stitches, then embroidered with small mustard stars.
Body
Ch 32, join to form a ring, taking care not to twist. (32)
R1: ch 1, sc around, sl st to first sc (32)
R2–R4: ch 1, sc around, sl st (32)

R1: ch 1, work 12 sc evenly around the armhole, sl st (12)
R2: ch 1, sc around, sl st (12)
Fasten off and weave in. Repeat for the second sleeve.
Embroidered Stars
Using mustard yellow yarn, embroider simple star shapes on the front of the T-shirt:
- For each star, work 4–5 straight stitches crossing in the center like a tiny “sparkle.”
- Scatter 5–6 stars unevenly on the chest, keeping some higher and some lower.
Slip the T-shirt onto the raccoon from the feet before assembling arms and shorts if you prefer it fixed in place.
Shorts (burnt orange)
Ch 40, join to form a ring. (40)
R1: ch 1, sc around, sl st (40)
R2–R4: ch 1, sc around, sl st (40)

Fasten off.
Second Leg
Attach yarn in the next unworked st of R5, sc around remaining 20 sts for leg opening.
R6–R9: ch 1, sc around, sl st (20)
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Slip the shorts onto the body; they should sit just over the lower curve of the belly like in the photo.

R8–R9: sc around (42)
R10 (band): BLO sc around (42)
R11: (5 sc, dec) x 6 (36)
Fasten off and weave in ends. Slightly pull one side downward so the beret tilts to the side.
Star Appliqué (cream)
Ch 2.
R1: 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st to first sc (5).
R2: (ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st in same st on ring) repeat from * to * 5 times to form 5 points.
Fasten off leaving a tail. Sew the star near the front of the beret where it tilts, matching the photo.
Scarf (mustard)
Ch 70.
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook and across (69).
Row 2: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st (69).
Fasten off and weave in ends. Wrap around the raccoon’s neck and tie with a soft knot, letting one end hang longer in front.

R7: sc around (17)
Change to dark gray for cuff.
R8: sc around (17), sl st to first sc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
The legs will slide into the cuff so the shoes look like short boots.
Crossbody Bag (navy)
Bag Body
Ch 11.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (10).
Rows 2–8: ch 1, turn, sc in each st (10).
Fold the rectangle in half to form a pouch 5 rows tall. Sc around the sides and bottom through both layers to close, leaving the top open. Fasten off.
Flap
Attach yarn at one top corner.
Row 1: sc in next 10 sts across the top back edge (10).
Rows 2–3: ch 1, turn, sc in each st (10).
Row 4: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 6, dec (8).
Fasten off and weave in ends. The flap will fold to the front.
Strap
Ch 60–65 (adjust for length so it sits nicely across the chest).
Fasten off.
Sew each end of the strap to the sides of the bag. Hang diagonally from one shoulder to the opposite hip.
Telescope & Tripod
Telescope Tube (pale blue & navy)
Start with pale blue.
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: (sc, inc) x 3 (9)
R3–R9: sc around (9)
Change to navy for eyepiece end.
R10–R12: sc around (9)
Fasten off and stuff the tube lightly but firmly so it holds shape.
Front Rim (navy)
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: (sc, inc) x 3 (9)
Fasten off, leaving a tail. Sew this flat circle to the wider end of the pale blue tube as the front rim.
Tripod Top Ring (navy)
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: sc around (12)
Do not stuff. This ring will sit under the tube as a base.
Sew the telescope tube along the top of this ring so the telescope angles slightly upward.
Tripod Legs (make 3 – dark gray)
Ch 18.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (17).
Fasten off and weave in one end, leaving the other for sewing.
Fold each strip in half lengthwise and sew edges together to make a firm narrow tube. Attach all three legs evenly spaced around the bottom of the tripod ring so the telescope stands securely.
Assembly
- Attach Legs: Position legs at the very bottom of the body so the raccoon stands straight. Sew around the closed tops securely.
- Attach Tail: Sew the striped tail on the center back, just above the shorts line. Curve it slightly to one side.
- Attach Arms: Sew arms on each side of the body at shoulder height, angling them slightly forward so one can rest near the telescope.
- Attach Ears: Sew the ears to the top sides of the head, slightly toward the back. Pinch their bases as you sew so they look pointed.
- Dress: Put the T-shirt and shorts on, making sure the shirt hem sits just over the waistband of the shorts. Slide on the shoes and tuck the legs into the cuffs.
- Scarf & Beret: Wrap the mustard scarf around the neck and tie loosely. Place the beret tilted to one side so the star sits near the forehead.
- Bag & Telescope: Hang the crossbody bag from one shoulder. Pose the raccoon beside the telescope, with one paw lightly resting against it if you like.
Finishing & Customization
- Add more or fewer embroidered stars on the T-shirt to change the night-sky feel.
- Slightly bend one ear forward for extra character.
- Work the telescope tube a few rounds longer for a larger instrument or shorter for a compact one.
- Swap colors to create different “astronomy club” members while keeping the same base pattern.
