Materials

  • Light DK or sport weight yarn (smooth, plied yarn shows stitches clearly) in:
    1. Beige/light tan – bunny body
    2. Cream – dress main color, sandals, shell bag
    3. Pale blue – dress hem and yoke, hat trim, float ring stripe
    4. Soft yellow or butter – dress detail, float ring stripe
    5. Coral/peach – cardigan, float ring stripe
    6. Light straw/beige – hat, ice cream cone
    7. Soft pink – ice cream swirl, float ring stripe
  • Needle size: 2.75 mm (US 2) circular or DPNs for working in the round
  • A pair of 2.75 mm straight needles (optional, for ears and cardigan pieces if you prefer flat)
  • Tapestry needle for sewing
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • 2 small black safety eyes (6–8 mm) or black yarn for embroidered eyes
  • A tiny bit of black or dark brown yarn for nose and mouth
  • Stitch markers
  • Pins for positioning pieces

Use small needles and firm tension so the knit fabric is dense and the stitches look crisp and realistic.

Gauge & Finished Size

  • Approximate gauge: 30 sts x 40 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette in the round.
  • Finished bunny height: about 9 in (23 cm) standing, excluding hat.

Exact gauge is not critical, but a firm fabric prevents stuffing from showing and keeps stitches sharp.

Notes & Construction Overview

  • The bunny is worked mostly in the round from the feet up:
    • Legs → joined into body → neck → head all in one piece.
  • Arms, ears, clothes, hat, bag, ice cream, and float ring are made separately and sewn on.
  • Work with a firm but not tight tension to keep the stitch definition clear.
  • Stuff gradually as you go, shaping with your fingers to keep the head and body smooth and rounded.

Color names in the instructions refer to the suggested palette above; you can substitute similar pastels.

Bunny Legs & Body

Legs (make 2, beige body color, in the round)

CO 10 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker for beginning of round.

Rnd 1–2: k all.
Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) repeat around (15 sts).
Rnd 4: k all.
Rnd 5: (k4, kfb) x3 (18 sts).

Rnds 6–18: k all for a straight lower leg.
Lightly stuff the foot and lower leg.

Cut yarn on first leg, leaving a tail. Work second leg the same but do not cut yarn.

Join for Body

Rnd 1: Knit across 18 sts of second leg, CO 4 sts with backward loop, knit across 18 sts of first leg, CO 4 sts, place marker at start of round. (18 + 4 + 18 + 4 = 44 sts)

Rnds 2–4: k all.

Rnd 5: (k10, kfb) x4, k4 (48 sts).
Rnds 6–10: k all (upper legs and hips). Stuff both legs firmly; begin stuffing body as you go.

Rnd 12–13: k all.

Rnd 14: (k5, k2tog) x6 (36 sts).
Rnd 15–18: k all (waist and lower torso).

Rnd 19: (k4, k2tog) x6 (30 sts).
Rnd 20–22: k all.

This is the chest area. Continue stuffing firmly, shaping a gentle curve from hips to chest.

Neck & Head

Rnd 23: (k3, k2tog) x6 (24 sts).
Rnd 24: k all.

Increase for Head

Change to working the head while continuing in beige.

Rnd 27: (k5, kfb) x6 (42 sts).
Rnd 28: (k6, kfb) x6 (48 sts).

Rnds 29–40: k all for a smooth, rounded head. Add stuffing gradually to make a firm, neat sphere. Take time to adjust the filling so the stitches sit evenly and clearly.

Place safety eyes between Rnds 33–34, about 7–8 sts apart, centered on the face. Do not over-stuff yet; leave a bit of space to embroider the mouth later.

Head Shaping

Rnd 41: (k6, k2tog) x6 (42 sts).
Rnd 42: k all.
Rnd 43: (k5, k2tog) x6 (36 sts).

Stuff more if needed to firm up the top of the head.

Rnd 48: (k1, k2tog) x6 (12 sts).
Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight and secure inside the head.

Embroider a small V-shaped nose and a gentle smile line with dark yarn, matching the expression in the photo: simple and friendly.

Using beige, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.

Rnd 1: k all.
Rnd 2: (k1, kfb) x4 (12 sts).

Cut yarn, leave a long tail. Flatten the top of each arm and sew closed. These flat tops will sit neatly against the body.

Fasten off. This forms the front shell shape.

Make a second identical piece for the back of the bag.

Sew around edges, leaving a small top opening.

For strap, with pale blue, CO 60 sts, BO loosely to create a thin I-cord–like chain (or knit a real 2-st I-cord). Sew strap ends to sides of the shell so it can go across the bunny’s body.

Ice Cream Cone

Cone (straw color)

CO 6 sts. Work in the round.

Rnd 1: k all.
Rnd 2: (k2, kfb) x2 (8 sts).

Row 1: k all.
Row 2: k all.
Change to pink.
Rows 3–6: k all.
Change back to cream.
Rows 7–10: k all.

Cut yarn, leave tail. Roll this strip into a spiral cone shape and stitch along the edge so it holds. Sew onto top of cone, hiding all raw edges. Attach cone to bunny’s hand later.

Float Ring

Use four pastel colors: blue, yellow, coral, pink. Work as a small donut in the round.

With blue, CO 24 sts. Join in the round.

Rnds 1–3: k all.
Change to yellow.
Rnds 4–6: k all.
Change to coral.
Rnds 7–9: k all.
Change to pink.
Rnds 10–12: k all.

Bind off loosely, leaving long tail. Stuff lightly as a tube. Join cast-on and bind-off edges to form a ring and sew closed, shaping into a smooth donut.

Assembly

  1. Attach Ears
    1. Pin ears to top sides of the head, slightly back from the eyes.
    2. Sew securely, folding the base a little to create the gentle curve.
  2. Attach Arms
    1. Position arms at sides of body, with tops just below the neck.
    2. Sew around the flattened tops, making sure both arms hang evenly.
  3. Dress the Bunny
    1. Put the dress on from the feet up.
    2. Close the back with a small snap, button, or a short tie made from yarn.
  4. Cardigan
    1. Slip the cardigan on over the dress, gently easing the arms through.
    2. The front edges stay open, just like in the photo.
  5. Hat & Accessories
    1. Place the straw hat on the head, tilting slightly. You can tack it down with a few hidden stitches if you want it fixed.
    2. Put sandals on the feet and sew soles lightly to the bottoms of the legs so they stay in place but still look like separate shoes.
    3. Cross the shell bag strap over the body from one shoulder to the opposite hip and tack it lightly to keep it from sliding.
    4. Sew the ice cream cone into one paw so it angles outward and is clearly visible.
    5. Arrange the float ring (and optional little shells if you knit more) around her feet for display; you can leave them loose for play or tack them to your display base.

Finishing Touches

  • Check all seams and ends, pulling stuffing gently into place so the body and head stay smooth and round.
  • Steam-block clothing and hat very lightly if needed to relax edges and make the pastel stitches stand out clearly. Avoid heavy blocking on the stuffed bunny itself.
  • Trim any visible yarn ends and tidy the facial embroidery.

Your Seaside Ice Cream Bunny is now ready for her day at the beach, with crisp, realistic knit stitches, soft pastel tones, and a full set of tiny accessories that invite people to look closer and smile.
