Materials
- DK / light worsted weight yarn in:
- Light pink (pig body, ears, snout, arms, legs)
- Cream or off-white (dress, hat base, jam jar lid “fabric”)
- Straw/tan (basket and hat brim if you prefer more contrast)
- Red (strawberries, sandals, jam, gingham check)
- Green (strawberry leaves)
- Small amount black (embroidered nostrils if desired)
- 2.25–2.5 mm crochet hook, or size to obtain a firm fabric
- Safety eyes: 8 mm black
- Stuffing (polyester fiberfill)
- Tapestry needle for sewing and embroidery
- Pins, scissors, stitch markers
Finished Size & Gauge
Gauge is not crucial, but your stitches should be firm so stuffing doesn’t show through.
With DK yarn and a 2.5 mm hook, the finished pig is about 18–20 cm (7–8″) tall from feet to top of head (hat adds a little extra height).
Construction Overview
Strawberry Picnic Pig is made from separate pieces:
- Pig – legs, body, head (worked together), arms, snout, ears, and a small tail.
- Outfit – simple cream dress, red sandals, and a wide-brim straw-style hat decorated with strawberries.
- Accessories – tiny basket, strawberry appliqués, and a crocheted jam jar with a gingham-style lid.
The dress, hat, shoes, and accessories are removable if you prefer, or you can secure them with a few stitches for extra stability.

Tail
R1: 5 sc in MR (5)
R2–4: sc around (5)
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Very lightly stuff or leave unstuffed for a curl. Sew centered on the lower back.
Dress – Cream Strawberry Sundress
Dress is worked top-down in joined rounds so it slides on from the feet.
Using cream yarn:
Yoke
R1: Ch 28, join with sl st to form a ring (be careful not to twist). (28)
R2: ch 1, sc around, join with sl st (28)

Hem Edge
R14 (FLO): skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sl st in next st repeat around to create soft scallops. Fasten off and weave in end.
Sleeve Edges
To roll the sleeve cuffs slightly, add a simple edging:
Attach cream yarn at the center underside of one armhole.
Row: ch 1, sc evenly around the armhole opening (about 12–14 sc), join with sl st, fasten off.
Repeat on the other arm.
Strawberry Appliqué for Dress
Use red.
R1: 4 sc in MR (4)
R2: (sc, inc) around (6)
R3: (2 sc, inc) around (8)
Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew. Shape into a triangle by pulling slightly at the bottom point.
Leaves (green): attach green at the top, ch 3, sl st in same st; move to next st, repeat 2–3 times to create little leafy bumps.
Sew the strawberry centered on the chest of the dress. Add a few tiny dark seed stitches if desired.
Sandals – Red (make 2)
R1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc, 3 sc in last ch; continue along other side of chain, 4 sc, 2 sc in last ch (13).

First strap: join yarn at outer side of shoe near ankle, ch 10, sl st to opposite side to create front strap.
Second strap: join yarn one row higher, ch 10, sl st to other side.
Weave in ends. Sandals should sit snugly on the foot with two visible red bands, heel open.
Straw-Style Hat with Strawberries
Use cream or straw/tan for the hat body.
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) around (18)

Jam Jar with Gingham Lid
Jar body (red):
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) around (18)
R4–6: sc around (18)
Fasten off and stuff firmly; close the top slightly by weaving through last round without pulling completely shut – leave a flat top.
Lid “fabric” (cream):
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) around (18)
Fasten off, place this flat circle on top of the jar, and sew around the edge with cream, creating a slight overhang like a fabric cover.
Gingham ties (red): with red yarn, embroider a few short straight stitches in a cross pattern on the lid and add a tiny band around the “neck” of the jar.
The jar can be lightly sewn to one of the pig’s hands so it looks like she is holding it securely.
Assembly
- Attach Arms
- Sew arms to the sides of the body at about neck level, just below the head, slightly angled forward so the pig can hold the basket and jar.
- Attach Ears
- Sew ears to the top of the head as described earlier, making sure they mirror each other and tilt slightly outward before curling in at the tips.
- Attach Tail
- Sew tail onto the lower back, allowing it to curl slightly to one side.
- Dress & Shoes
- Slip the dress over the pig from the feet up.
- Adjust the armholes so the shoulders sit neatly and the hem falls just above the feet.
- Put the sandals onto the feet, making sure both red straps show clearly on the front.
- Hat & Accessories
- Place the hat low on the head, just above the eyes. You can secure it with a few stitches on each side if this will be a display doll or a gift for a small child.
- Position the basket in one hand with the handle looped over the arm.
- Stitch the jam jar to the other hand so it stands upright, just like in the picture.
Finishing Touches
- Add a hint of blush on the cheeks using soft pastel, blush powder, or a couple of tiny embroidered circles with pale pink yarn.
- Make sure the snout is centered and slightly protruding; adjust stuffing if needed to keep the face round and sweet.
- If you’d like, crochet one or two extra strawberries to tuck inside the basket for an even cuter picnic story.
Your Strawberry Picnic Pig is now ready for a sunny afternoon in the garden, sitting on a checkered blanket with her basket and jam jar. This little pig is perfect for spring and summer décor, gifts, or as a star of your next crochet photo shoot.
