Meet Rainy Day Puppy – a soft beige puppy in a aqua rain pinafore, striped tee sleeves, a cream bucket hat with clouds and raindrops, mint cloud shoes, and a tiny round cloud bag, holding a little umbrella prop.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR – magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • inc – increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec – invisible decrease (sc 2 sts together)

Materials

  • DK / light worsted weight yarn:
    1. Light beige (puppy body, ears, muzzle, arms, legs)
    2. Cream (hat, sleeve base, sock edges)
    3. Pale aqua / duck-egg blue (dress, bag, raindrops)
    4. Mint green (shoe uppers – can be same as dress if you like)
    5. White (cloud appliqués)
    6. Dark brown (nose and mouth embroidery, optional safety nose)
  • 8 mm black safety eyes
  • Crochet hook 2.25–2.5 mm or size for firm fabric
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle, scissors, pins, stitch markers
  • Optional: miniature clear doll umbrella prop

Finished Size & Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but fabric should be firm so stuffing does not show through.

With DK yarn and 2.5 mm hook, Rainy Day Puppy is about 20–22 cm (8–9″) tall, including the hat.

Notes

  • Stuff as you go, keeping the head and body firmly filled for a stable shape.
  • Invisible decreases help keep the fabric smooth.
  • Color changes are made on the last yarn-over of the previous stitch.

Construction Overview

You will crochet:

  1. Puppy body – legs, body, and head in one piece, plus separate arms, ears, and a small tail.
  2. Outfit – aqua pinafore dress with textured raindrops, striped “tee” sleeves, mint shoes with clouds, and a bucket hat with clouds and dangling drops.
  3. Accessories – round crossbody cloud bag.

The umbrella is a purchased miniature prop.

R14: (2 sc, inc) around (36)
R15: (5 sc, inc) around (42)

R25: dec around (6)

Fasten off and close. Finish stuffing so the head is large and slightly oval, matching the puppy look.

Arms (make 2 – beige, cream, aqua stripes)

Start with beige for paws.

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: (sc, inc) around (9)
R3–4: sc around (9) – paw

Change to cream for sleeve base.

R5: (sc, dec) around (6)
R6: sc around (6)

Add aqua stripes:

R7: change to aqua, sc around (6)
R8: change to cream, sc around (6)
R9: change to aqua, sc around (6)

R10–12: change back to cream, sc around (6)

Stuff lightly, mainly in the hand. Flatten the open end and sc across 3 sts to close. Leave a long tail for sewing.

The stripes will sit as short-sleeve details below the dress straps.

Muzzle

Use beige (same as body, but it will stand out by shaping).

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: (3 sc, inc) around (15)
R4–5: sc around (15)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Stuff lightly.

Position centered between the eyes, slightly lower. Sew in place, keeping the top edge slightly higher than the center so it slopes downwards.

With brown yarn, embroider a small oval nose at the top center of the muzzle and a short line down; optionally add a tiny “Y” mouth.

Ears (make 2 – beige)

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: (sc, inc) around (9)
R3: (2 sc, inc) around (12)
R4: (3 sc, inc) around (15)
R5–7: sc around (15)

Fasten off, leave a long tail. Do not stuff. Flatten and fold the base slightly to make a gentle floppy ear. Sew one on each side of the head, low enough that the hat will sit on top but still shows the ears peeking out.

Tail

R1: 5 sc in MR (5)
R2–7: sc around (5)

Fasten off, leave a tail. Stuff lightly or leave unstuffed. Sew at the center back, just above the legs.

Raindrop Appliqués

Use aqua.

Make 8–10.

R1: Ch 3, all in 2nd ch from hook: sc, hdc, sc. Sl st in same ch. Fasten off leaving a tail.

Tug the top slightly to sharpen the point. Sew raindrops scattered on the front of the skirt.

Round Cloud Bag

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc around (12)

Hat

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) around (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc) around (30)
R6: (4 sc, inc) around (36)

Brim:

R10 (FLO): (5 sc, inc) around (42)
R11: (6 sc, inc) around (48)

R1: ch 7.
In 2nd ch from hook: sc, hdc, 3 dc in next ch, 3 dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch. Fasten off.

Sew clouds on the front and side of the hat.

Hanging Raindrops (aqua)

Make 2–3 small drops as before (same as skirt raindrops), but leave long tails.

For each drop, attach a chain “string”:
Ch 10–14 from the drop’s top loop. Sew the free end of the chain under the brim’s edge so the drop hangs down near one ear, matching the photo look.

Cloud Shoes – Mint Mary Janes (make 2)

Use mint and white.

R1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc, 3 sc in last ch; continue on other side of chain, 4 sc, 2 sc in last ch (13).
R2: inc, 4 sc, 3 inc, 4 sc, 2 inc (20).
R3: sc around (20).
R4 (BLO): sc around (20).
R5: sc around (20).
R6: sc 7, (dec) 3 times, sc to end (17).
R7: sc around (17), sl st to join.

Strap: join mint yarn at one side, ch 12, sl st to opposite side, fasten off and weave in.

Tiny Clouds (white, make 2)

R1: ch 5. In 2nd ch from hook: sc, hdc in next ch, hdc in next, sc in next, sl st. Fasten off.

Sew one cloud to each shoe front.

Assembly

  1. Attach Arms
Sew arms to the body at neck level (around R13 of body), slightly forward so one hand can hold the umbrella prop and the other hangs by the side or rests on the bag strap.
  2. Attach Tail
Sew the tail to the back, just above the legs.
  3. Dress the Puppy
Slip the pinafore dress on from the feet upward, pulling the straps over the shoulders and crossing at the back. Ensure the raindrops face front.
  4. Shoes
Put the shoes on the feet, making sure the straps sit nicely across the instep and the clouds are centered.
  5. Bag & Hat
Place the hat on the head, tilting slightly forward but not covering the eyes. If you want it secure, add a couple of hidden stitches.
Drape the bag strap across the body from one shoulder to the opposite hip. Stitch in place at a few points if desired so it doesn’t slide.
  6. Umbrella Prop
Position a clear miniature umbrella in one paw. You can stitch the handle to the paw or thread it between the fingers created by the stitches so it stays in place.

Finishing Touches

  • Add a soft blush to the cheeks with fabric paint or a tiny amount of pastel.
  • Adjust the ear flop and hat angle to give your Rainy Day Puppy a shy, cozy expression.
  • Arrange the raindrops and cloud bag for photos so the textures and motifs show clearly.

Your Rainy Day Puppy is now complete – a sweet little friend ready to stand by the window and watch the rain in her pastel rain outfit.
