Construction Overview
Farmer’s Market Pup is built in separate parts:
- Legs with green shoes, joined to form the body.
- Body and neck are worked upward in one piece.
- Head is crocheted separately and sewn on, with an added muzzle and floppy ears.
- Arms and small tail are stitched to the body.
- Dress and hat are removable pieces.
- Market tote and produce are separate accessories for styling.
Stuff as you go, keeping the toy firm but slightly squishy.

Place muzzle centered between the eyes, bottom edge about 1–2 rnds above the bottom of the head. Pin, then sew. Embroider a small wide oval nose at the center top of the muzzle with dark brown, then a short vertical line down and a simple smiling mouth. Add tiny eyebrows a couple of stitches above the eyes.

Rnd 3–4: sc in each st (9)
Stuff lightly, close with a few sts. Sew at back of body near bottom.
Clothing
Mary Jane Shoes Details
The shoes are already included in the legs. To emphasize the Mary Jane look, embroider a short strap across each ankle with green yarn or surface crochet a 2–3 st bar across the top of the foot.
Yellow Market Dress
This dress is a simple gathered sundress with two straps. We’ll give a crochet “gingham feeling” by working alternating color rows and adding surface stripes.
Skirt
With soft yellow, ch 52, join to form a ring (do not twist).
Rnd 1: ch 1, sc in each ch around (52)
Rnd 2: (sc, inc) x26 (78)
Rnd 3–5: sc in each st (78)
Change to white/cream.
Rnd 6–7: sc in each st (78)
Change back to yellow.
Rnd 8–10: sc in each st (78)
Repeat color change pattern yellow/white once more if you want more length, or stop at rnd 10. Fasten off and weave in.
Waistband
With yellow, join yarn at any st on top edge of skirt.
Row 1: ch 1, sc in next 26 sts, turn. (This panel will be the front waistband.)
Row 2–3: ch 1, sc across 26 sts, turn.
Fasten off. The back of the skirt remains open to make dressing easier.
Add a snap or a few small stitches at the back when dressing the pup.
Straps (make 2)
With yellow, ch 23.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (22). Fasten off.
Sew one end of each strap to the front top corners of the waistband. Put the dress on the pup, cross straps at the back, and sew their ends to the back edge of the skirt so they sit nicely over the shoulders.
Gingham Lines (optional but cute)
With white/cream yarn, use surface slip stitch to work vertical lines evenly spaced around the skirt, matching the horizontal color bands to suggest a checkered pattern.
Straw Sun Hat
With light beige:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30)
Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) x6 (36)
Rnd 7–8: sc in each st (36)
This forms the crown.
Rnd 9 (start brim, FLO): (5 sc, inc) x6 (42)
Rnd10: (6 sc, inc) x6 (48)
Rnd11: (7 sc, inc) x6 (54)
Rnd12: sc in each st (54)
Fasten off and lightly steam or block the brim so it curves softly downward like a straw hat. Place on the pup’s head; you can add a couple of hidden stitches through the ears to keep it in place.
Accessories
Market Tote Bag
With natural beige:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
Rnd 5 (BLO): sc in each st (24)
Rnd 6–11: sc in each st (24)
This forms a simple cylindrical tote.
Rnd 12: (2 sc, dec) x6 (18)
Fasten off and weave in end, leaving top edge slightly tapered.
Handles
Attach beige yarn at one side of the opening.
Ch 18, skip 3–4 sts, sl st to opposite side to create a handle. Fasten off.
Repeat on the back side to form a second strap so the pup can hold the tote by one strap while the bag hangs.
Carrots (make 2–3)
Carrot body – with orange:
Rnd 1: 4 sc in MR (4)
Rnd 2: sc in each st (4)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x2 (6)
Rnd 4–5: sc in each st (6)
Rnd 6: (2 sc, inc) x2 (8)
Rnd 7–9: sc in each st (8)
Stuff lightly.
Rnd 10: (sc, dec) x2, 2 sc (6)
Fasten off, sew end closed shaping a gentle taper.
Greens – with green:
Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (6), fasten off. Make 2–3 strands and sew them to the wide end of each carrot. Arrange carrots poking out of the tote.
📌Thank you for reading the article.
Bread/Baguette
With tan/light brown:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: (sc, inc) x3 (9)
Rnd 3–10: sc in each st (9)
Stuff firmly.
Rnd 11: (sc, dec) x3 (6)
Fasten off, close opening. With slightly darker brown, embroider diagonal “slashed” lines across the top to mimic a baguette crust. Place in the tote next to the carrots.
Sunflower
Center – with brown:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: inc around (12)
Rnd 3: sc in each st (12). Fasten off.
Make a second identical circle. Place wrong sides together and sew almost all the way around, add a tiny bit of stuffing, then finish sewing closed.
Petals – with yellow:
Working around the edge of the joined center, attach yellow yarn in any st.
(ch 3, 2 dc in same st, ch 3, sl st in next st) around.
You’ll get a ring of petals all the way around. Fasten off and weave in.
Stem & Leaf
With green, ch 12.
Row 1: sl st in each ch back to start, fasten off.
Sew one end to the back of the sunflower as a stem. Optionally add a small leaf by making a tiny oval (ch 4, sc, hdc, sc on one side of chain, sl st on the other) and sewing it near the top of the stem.
Place the sunflower so it peeks from the front of the tote, or lightly tack it to the pup’s paw.
Assembly
- Attach Head:
Sew the head securely onto the neck, keeping the face centered over the legs. Take several passes around for stability. - Add Limbs & Tail:
Sew arms where indicated, angling slightly forward. Add the tail at the back. - Dress the Pup:
Put on the dress from the back, close the opening with small stitches or a snap. Cross and secure straps at the back so they sit flat. - Hat Placement:
Place the straw hat low over the forehead, slightly tilted. You can tack it through the ears with a few stitches if you want it fixed. - Accessories:
Position the tote in one paw and secure with a few stitches. Arrange carrots, bread, and sunflower inside the bag so all items are visible from the front.
Finishing Touches
- Embroider a few short lines above the eyes for gentle eyebrows.
- Add the tiniest blush circles with pink yarn or fabric-safe blush on the cheeks.
- Check all seams and accessories for security, especially if the toy is for a child.
