Introduction

Meet the STEM Lab Bunny: a nerdy-cute science lover styled for a pastel classroom scene. This amigurumi wears a mint beanie with a Pi badge, clear “safety goggles,” a white polo shirt with a mint collar and atomic chest emblem, soft gray culotte shorts, and clean white sneakers. The star accessory is a crossbody test-tube bag filled with “colorful liquids” (stacked yarn sections) and a tiny cap.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Step 1: Form & Proportion Analysis

  • Finished height: ~9.75–10 in (24–25.5 cm) with DK cotton and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Head: Slightly oval sphere; widest around Rnds 16–20. Eyes are low and wide (8 mm), set 8 stitches apart between Rnds 13–14. Nose is a small triangle/oval stitched in cocoa; mouth is a single downstroke with a tiny curve.
  • Ears: Long, soft ovals that hang down; attached slightly behind the eye line, angled forward to peek from under the beanie.
  • Body: Compact cylinder with a gentle belly; neck slim for a snug polo collar.
  • Arms: Straight tubes, light stuffing only at hands; attached a touch forward so the test-tube strap sits naturally.
  • Legs/Feet: Straight legs from rounded sneakers. Soles have a defined foxing line; laces are simple embroidered ties.
  • Outfit:
    1. Beanie: Mint rib with folded brim and a round Pi badge.
    2. Polo: White body with textured waffle grid, mint collar and sleeve cuffs, two tiny placket buttons, embroidered atom icon on the left chest.
    3. Culottes: Mid-rise, wide-leg shorts in light gray with subtle basket/rice stitch texture.
    4. Sneakers: Cream/white with rounded toe and stitched lace detail.
    5. Goggles: Soft translucent look achieved by a light cream/white yarn i-cord frame and a flat strap—sits just under the beanie brim.
    6. Test-tube bag: Cylindrical mesh with stacked color bands (yellow–orange–red) and a short mint band at the top; tiny droplet sticker (embroidered circle) on front; cream strap crosses left shoulder to right hip.
  • Stitch density: Doll fabric ≈ 8 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm); clothing a hair looser for drape.
  • Angles: Ears slightly forward; legs perpendicular for parallel stance; beanie sits low above eyebrows; strap tilted ~45°.

Materials

  • DK-weight 100% cotton yarn in:

    4. C4 Light gray (culottes)

Assembly & Dressing

Order

  1. Dress the polo first.
  2. Pull on culottes; line the waistband at the natural waist.
  3. Put on sneakers (or add lace detail to fixed feet).
  4. Place goggles around the head; seat the frame just beneath where the beanie will sit.
  5. Position beanie low and tack at two points; push ears to peek out.
  6. Hang the test-tube bag from left shoulder to right hip.

Blocking, Styling & Care

  • Hover steam to relax the collar, culotte hems, and beanie brim—do not touch iron to cotton.
  • Pinch the sneaker toes while warm to keep them round.
  • Spot clean only; air dry.
  • For photos, lean the bunny lightly against a wall or lab chart; the flat sneaker soles help stability.

Troubleshooting

  • Head wobble: Add a neck peg (6 sc around × 4–5 rnds) between head and body before sewing.
  • Culottes too snug/loose: Adjust waistband chain by ±2; keep leg split at half the total count.
  • Polo tight at underarm: When dividing sleeves, use ch 5 instead of ch 4 and pick up one extra st on the first round after dividing.
  • Beanie rides up: Add one more decrease round on the crown, or tack the brim to the head at the back.
  • Goggles slipping: Shorten the strap by 2–4 chains or add a tiny hidden stitch to the beanie brim.

  • Head: max 42 sts; eyes between R13–14 (8 sts apart); close at 12.
  • Ears: 12-st tubes to R18; attach high with forward tilt.

  • Arms: 9-st tubes taper to 7.
  • Legs/Shoes: sole 18; leg tube 12 → 8.

  • Culottes: waist 48 → 54; legs 27/27.
  • Test-tube: base 18; mesh bands in C6/C7/C8/C6; rim 36 sts; strap ch 80–90.
